Contamination is defined as any substance which is foreign to a fluid system and damaging to its performance. Contamination can exist as a gas, liquid or solid. Solid contamination, generally referred to as particulate contamination, comes in all sizes and shapes and is normally abrasive. High contaminant levels accelerate component wear and decrease service life. Worn components, in turn contribute to inefficient system operation, seizure of parts, higher fluid temperatures, leakage, and loss of control.
All of these phenomena are the result of direct mechanical action between the contaminants and the system components. Contamination can also act as a catalyst to accelerate oxidation of the fluid and spur the chemical breakdown of its constituents.
